Mission
ISRD is now closed. Our mission
[was] to utilize learning and instructional technology-related research to help clients improve training
outcomes.
To accomplish this mission we conducted original research into
the expert practices of instructional system designers.
ISRD also developed a method and software tools to assist training
organizations in the application of expert-level courseware
practices.
Methods
ISRD
conducted both research and development activities. Our
research focused on uncovering expert-level instructional
design practices. Some
of our past research programs included studies of methods to
improve computer-based instructional courseware, and evaluation of blended
online/onsite learning
environments. Development included the incorporation of
innovative story-based training methods, simulation-based methods,
and game-based strategies into blended and online training programs.
History
Instructional Systems Research
& Development (ISRD) was a small disadvantaged business founded in
1999 by Dr. Kurt Rowley. In a development effort for the
Defense Acquisition University, ISRD led the instructional re-design
of a major course, the Intermediate Systems Acquisition Course,
taken by over 5,000 students annually (1999-2000).
In a study sponsored by the Office of Naval
Research, ISRD developed a method to allow instructional design teams to
follow expert practices in the design and development of instructional
courseware (2001-2004).
ISRD [was] located in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Founder
Kurt Rowley,
Ph.D. presented his research at
national and international conferences, and published study
results. He is a
contributor to online discussion groups related to the use of
instructional technologies. Kurt is interested in
increasing the use of expert instructional design practices and
advanced training strategies, and thereby improving training
outcomes at all
levels.
