5	Research CDST Basis in Research The CDST was developed as part of a study sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, Division of Cognitive, Neural and Social Research. Purpose of the Study To address the need for more use of instructional design methods and learning research by military training organizations To provide a research-based instructional design tool for use by entire courseware teams To assist courseware teams of subject-matter experts (SMEs), media artists, instructors, and other team members with the use of instructional design methods
6	Expert Design Method Based on the study results: Success factors of expert courseware designers were identified The overarching process of expert design was identified The ‘ISRD Expert Design Method’ was created to reflect best practices The method designed to help courseware teams use expert courseware designer practices was developed and refined through a series of try-outs. Over 100 detailed instructional design sub-processes were identified and analyzed. Worksheets were created as job-aids for each sub-process
