Description of the CDST
  • “A Software System to Support Courseware Design Teams”
4
What is the CDST?
  • A software tool to help courseware design and development teams apply instructional design methods used by experts
  • Multi-user through a LAN
  • Provides an instructional design ‘platform’ for all team members
  • Supports the use of the ISRD Expert Design Method by team members
5
Research
  • CDST Basis in Research
    • The CDST was developed as part of a study sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, Division of Cognitive, Neural and Social Research.
  • Purpose of the Study
    • To address the need for more use of  instructional design methods and learning research by military training organizations
    • To provide a research-based instructional design tool for use by entire courseware teams
    • To assist courseware teams of subject-matter experts (SMEs), media artists, instructors, and other team members with  the use of instructional design methods
6
Expert Design Method
  • Based on the study results:
    • Success factors of expert courseware designers were identified
    • The overarching process of expert design was identified
    • The ‘ISRD Expert Design Method’ was created to reflect best practices
    • The method designed to help courseware teams use expert courseware designer practices was developed and  refined through a series of try-outs.
    • Over 100 detailed instructional design sub-processes were identified and analyzed.
    • Worksheets were created as job-aids for each sub-process
7
CDST Supports Method
  • The CDST was created
    • to provide an electronic performance support tool for using the ISRD Expert Design Method
    • The CDST included all worksheets for the method
    • The CDST supports  the entire expert courseware development method

8
Features of the CDST
  • “Features to help design teams follow  expert design practices”
9
Features
  • 24 Lessons provide instruction in all aspects of using the ISRD Expert Design Method, and the CDST
  • Advisor directs users to appropriate CDST content for specific design decisions
  • Over 100 worksheets act as job aids for sub-processes of instructional design tasks
  • Database for managing multiple design data items that may result from each Worksheet
10
